Date and Sesame Energy Balls
In the winters and early spring, when the body needs a little more lubrication to keep joints functioning optimally, the consumption of oil seeds such as flax, sesame and sunflower is encouraged. This is where Gajak, Til ke Laddoo, Chikki, etc. were born. This recipe for Date and Sesame cuts out the processed sugar and uses softened dates to make Til ke Laddoo or bite-sized energy balls that are perfect for that post lunch dessert or a pre-workout pop.
Play around with flavours; we have used cocoa and vanilla but you could use cardamom as well. Or replace some of the seeds with coarsely crushed nuts once in a while!
- 1 cup soft seedless dates
- 3 tablespoons flax seeds
- 1 teaspoon (more or less as you like it) Cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon Vanilla extract
- a pinch of Cinnamon powder (optional)
- 1 and ½ tablespoon white sesame seeds
- 1 and ½ tablespoon black sesame seeds
- a few drops of ghee for greasing
- Place the flax seeds in a blender jar and pulse to a coarse powder.
- To this, add the dates and process until well blended. If your dates are not very soft, simply microwave them for 30 seconds and proceed. Make sure not to overdo the microwaving because that will make your energy balls too hard.
- Now, add the cocoa and vanilla and pulse again to combine.
- Roll the mixture into bite0sized balls, about the size of a small lime.
- Mix the two kinds of sesame seeds together in a dish.
- Coat the date balls with the sesame seeds by rolling the ball into the dish.
- Store at room temperature for up to 15 days.
